Seismic Wave Attenuation in Fluid-saturated Porous Media

چکیده
Contrary to the traditional view, seismic attenuation in Biot's theory of uid-saturated porous media is due to viscous damping of local (not global) pore-uid motion. Since substantial inhomogeneities in uid permeability of porous geological materials are to be expected, the regions of highest local permeability contribute most to the wave energy dissipation while those of lowest permeability dominate the uid ow rate if they are uniformly distributed. This dichotomy can explain some of the observed discrepancies between computed and measured attenuation of compressional and shear waves in porous earth. One unfortunate consequence of this result is the fact that measured seismic wave attenuation in uid-lled geological materials cannot be used directly as a diagnostic of the global uid-ow permeability.

Seismic attenuation and velocity dispersion in heterogeneous partially saturated porous rocks
S U M M A R Y Using a numerical approach, we explore wave-induced fluid flow effects in partially saturated porous rocks in which the gas–water saturation patterns are governed by mesoscopic heterogeneities associated with the dry frame properties. The link between the dry frame properties and the gas saturation is defined by the assumption of capillary pressure equilibrium, which in the presen...
متن کاملReflection and Transmission of Longitudinal Wave at Micropolar Viscoelastic Solid/Fluid Saturated Incompressible Porous Solid Interface
In this paper, the reflection and refraction of longitudinal wave from a plane surface separating a micropolar viscoelastic solid half space and a fluid saturated incompressible half space is studied. A longitudinal wave (P-wave) impinges obliquely at the interface. Amplitude ratios for various reflected and transmitted waves have been obtained. Then these amplitude ratios have been computed nu...
متن کاملReservoir permeability from seismic attribute analysis
In case of porous fluid-saturated medium the Biot’s poroelasticity theory predicts a movement of the pore fluid relative to the skeleton on seismic wave propagation through the medium. This phenomenon opens an opportunity for investigation of the flow properties of the hydrocarbon-saturated reservoirs. It is well known that relative fluid movement becomes negligible at seismic frequencies if po...
متن کاملeismic wave attenuation and dispersion resulting from wave-induced ow in porous rocks — A review
One major cause of elastic wave attenuation in heterogeneous porous media is wave-induced flow of the pore fluid between heterogeneities of various scales. It is believed that for frequencies below 1 kHz, the most important cause is the wave-induced flow between mesoscopic inhomogeneities, which are large compared with the typical individual pore size but small compared to the wavelength. Acoustic waves can be a viable tool for the detection and identification of land mines, unexplored ordnance (UXO), and other buried objects. Design of acoustic instruments and interpretation and processing of acoustic measurements call for accurate numerical models to simulate acoustic wave propagation in a heterogeneous soil with buried objects. Compared with the traditional seismic exploratio...
